US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been denounced by German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a “hate preacher”, who plays on people’s fear.

Steinmeier made the remarks on Thursday, saying, the New York businessman belongs to the emerging band of those who spread fear among people, in what is seen as a shared phenomenon among right-wing populists in different countries throughout the world.

The German foreign minister also described his country’s right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party and the supporters of Britain leaving the European Union as those pursuing the policy of hate preaching.

In late July, Steinmeier had expressed concerns about Trump threatening US and world security with his “politics of fear” and the belligerent rhetoric the Republican nominee has adopted during his presidential campaign rallies.

"A politics of fear and isolation will bring less security, not more, and would be dangerous not only for the United States, but for Europe and the rest of the world as well," the German official said.

The New York businessman's campaign has been marred by his disparaging remarks against minorities in the US. His comments include a call to ban all Muslims from coming to America as well as forced deportation of Mexican migrants by building a long wall along the US-Mexico border.

He has also sought for a database to track Muslims across the United States and said that the US would have "absolutely no choice" but to close down mosques.

Trump’s proposal has been condemned by Muslim and human rights groups as well as his Democratic rivals and many of his Republican proponents who describe the proposal as divisive, counterproductive and contrary to American values.
