Death toll from terrorist attack in Nice rises to 84

  • The death toll from a terrorist attack in the French city of Nice has risen to 84. Scores of others were injured, including 18 in critical condition. This, after a gunman smashed a truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day. Authorities have found identity papers belonging to a Franco-Tunisian in the truck.
  • The French President has extended the state of emergency for another three months following the truck attack in southern France. Francois Hollande said the attack was clearly a terrorist act. He also called on army reservists to boost security across the country. 
  • Condemnations are pouring in following the deadly attack in Nice. European Council President Donald Tusk expressed his strong condemnation following the attack. The UN Security Council strongly condemned the barbaric and cowardly terrorist attack. US President Barack Obama and Luxembourg’s prime minister also denounced the attack.
  • The Yemeni national delegation has left the capital Sana’a for a new round of peace talks in Kuwait after meeting with UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. The delegation reiterated their demand for an end to the Saudi aggression against Yemen, which has claimed over 95-hundred lives since March last year.
  • Daesh terrorists say they have downed a Syrian warplane near the city of Dayr al-Zawr. The pilot of the MiG fighter jet is said to have been killed in the crash. A UK-based opposition group has confirmed the news but the Syrian government is yet to comment on the issue.
  • Egypt has sentenced 10 people to prison and financial fines over protesting against President Sisi’s decision to hand over two islands to Saudi Arabia. They were each sentenced to three years in jail and paying a nearly 10-thousand dollar fine. The defendants can appeal the verdict. 
  • The US Congress is set to release a report detailing possible ties of Saudi Arabia to the perpetrators of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York. The top secret documents are part of a congressional investigation of the attacks. They have been classified since the report's completion in 2002.
  • US Secretary of State John Kerry has held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The two sides have discussed cooperation to find a solution to the Syria crisis. The US has offered Russia a broad new military partnership in Syria, including intelligence sharing.
