Pornpgraphy a ‘public health crisis’ in US: Republicans

Pornography in the United States has become “a public health crisis,” Republican delegates to the GOP presidential nominating convention say.

Pornography in the United States has become “a public health crisis” and a “public menace” that is destroying the lives of millions, Republican delegates to the GOP presidential nominating convention say.

During preliminary meetings in Cleveland, Ohio, on Monday, Republican delegates unanimously adopted an amendment to their draft platform which called for current laws on pornography and obscenity to be “vigorously enforced.”

"The internet must not become a safe haven for predators," the provision states. "Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions.”

“We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children's safety and well-being. We applaud the social networking sites that bar sex offenders from participation. We urge energetic prosecution of child pornography which closely linked to human trafficking."

A 112-member committee formed by two delegates from each of the 50 US states, the capital Washington, DC, and five US territories will vote on the final platform on Tuesday.

In the draft platform, Republican delegates also blasted the “dangerous” directive by the White House to schools to allow transgender students to use restrooms and locker rooms that    correspond to their gender identity.

Mary Forrester, a delegate from North Carolina who offered the amendment, said pornography has become an “insidious epidemic.”

“It seems to be for young people, they do not have the discernment and so they become addicted before they have the maturity to understand the consequences,” she said.

Critics of pornography in the United States have blamed it for a series of societal and spiritual ills. Many attempts were made in the 1970s to close down the US porn industry by prosecuting those in the industry on prostitution charges, though many of those attempts failed.
