US, regional allies hand in glove in Syria crisis: Pundit

Turkey and Saudi Arabia provide terrorist groups in Syria with US-made weapons and ammunition, Soraya Sepahpour Ulrich, independent researcher and writer in California, said in an interview with Press TV on Sunday.

“It was a US foreign policy tool to deploy terrorists,” Ulrich said, adding, “The United States has been supporting the paid mercenaries with money and weapons as have certain Arab states.”

In a letter sent to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and to the UN Security Council, the Syrian Foreign Ministry accused several regional countries and Western powers of supporting the terrorists and condemned the states that are claiming to be battling terrorism in Syria.

The US supports terrorist groups in Syria under the pretext of defending the security of the Israeli regime and keeping its Arab allies happy, Ulrich argued.

Referring to the reason behind supporting terrorist mercenaries in Syria by certain Middle Eastern states, she noted that Turkey promised the Persian Gulf Arab states to provide them with sweet water.

She further said in contradiction to what the Western propaganda campaign against Syria is disseminating, the Arab states are not worried about the military might of the Syrian government but the Israelis do not want to see a powerful Arab country beside them.

“Amos Yadlin, former Israeli intelligence chief, said the military power of Syria is of concern to Israel,” Ulrich maintained, adding the Israelis prefer the terrorists to the Syrian government.

Michael lane, head of the American Institute for Foreign Policy, told Press TV that the United States has refused to engage in a leadership role in the Syria conflict and left its allies to devise their own priorities and campaign plans.

He added the regional allies of Washington want to keep the battle going in Syria because they are concerned about the military might of Damascus. The US has provided sporadic support for the so-called moderate militants dubbed the Free Syrian Army, which is not an effective group in the war-torn Arab country, he said.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-sponsored militancy since March 2011, which left millions of the Syrian people displaced. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura confirms that over 400,000 people have been killed because of the conflict.
