Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • The death toll from the violence in Indian controlled Kashmir has reached at least 18 people, including one police officer. Clashes erupted after protesters defied a curfew and organized a funeral ceremony for a top pro-independence commander Burhan Wani. The Muslim-majority region is divided between India and Pakistan.
  • The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says nearly 30 terrorists have been killed in clashes with government troops, northwest of the city of Aleppo. The terrorists failed in their attempt to retake control of a key part of Castello road. That's their only supply line into Aleppo.
  • French President Francoise Holland says al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front and other terrorist groups are benefiting from the US-led military campaign in Syria, given that the fight is being mainly concentrated on Daesh there. Hollande argues the recent losses of Daesh could strengthen other terror groups.
  • Egypt says Foreign Minister Samah Shoukry is having a trip to Israel to meet Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a series of discussions including peace talks with the Palestinians. Relations between Cairo and Tel Aviv have been improving since President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took office in Egypt in 2014.
  • Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister at the time of the 2003 invasion of Iraq has described the war as illegal. John Prescott says the then Premier Tony Blair had promised US President George W Bush to join the offensive eight months before it happened. Prescott says regime change was the prime objective of the war.
  • Iranian Parliament Member Heshmatollah Falahat Pisheh has escaped an assassination attempt in the western part of the country. Reports say two local officials were injured while the driver was killed. The motive behind the attack is unknown.
  • An Iranian fighter jet has crashed near the southern city of Shiraz following a damage to one of its engines. The two pilots on board managed to eject safely. The doomed jet was a Russian-made Sukhoi-24. Tehran has signed a contract with Moscow to buy newer versions of the aircraft.
  • Hundreds of Britons have staged a demonstration in the capital against the recent police killings of African Americans in the United States. Traffic ground to a halt in downtown London. There have been reports of scuffles between a number of protesters and angry drivers.
