US Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders has implied a formal endorsement of his party rival, Hillary Clinton, saying he will spare no effort to support electing her as the Democratic nominee for president.

“We have got to do everything that we can to defeat Donald Trump and elect Hillary Clinton,” Sanders said during an interview with MSNBC on Thursday. “I don’t honestly know how we would survive four years of a Donald Trump as president.”

When asked whether he would not refute speculations that he would endorse the former secretary of state in the next few days, Sanders replied, "That's correct."

Reports said the Vermont senator is expected to back Clinton at a campaign event in New Hampshire on Tuesday .

Sanders refused to endorse Clinton after she became the presumptive Democratic nominee having garnered the last round of delegates and super-delegates up for grabs in primaries in New Jersey and California in early-June.

The senator has also rejected the idea that he should withdraw from the race, saying, he is focusing on his leverage over the Democratic Party platform.

In an interview with CNN late June, Sanders expressed dissatisfaction with the US political process.

"I think the system has many, many flaws, but we knew what we were getting into," Sanders said, referring to his doubts about Clinton’s fair winning of the nomination. "I'm not saying that they changed the rules. No, they didn't."

Sanders had earlier said that he would not endorse Clinton for president until they meet and he could measure her commitment to combating wealth inequality, and other issues that powered his presidential campaign.

Sanders’ emphasis on US income inequality and the influence of corporate money on elections and the government helped him attract millions of voters to his campaign.
