US policies strengthen alliance between Russia, China: Analyst

“If you look at the map, you can see from the Baltics to the Korean peninsula the United States is militarily deployed, active and threatening,” American journalist Don DeBar says.

The US government’s hostile policies toward Russia and China will only bolster the alliance between Moscow and Beijing, allowing them to surpass Washington in terms of political and economic power, says a political analyst in New York.

Don DeBar, a journalist and radio host, made the comments on Thursday while discussing Washington’s military posture in the disputed South China Sea.

US naval officials say American warships have sailed close to Chinese-controlled islands in the disputed South China Sea in recent weeks, patrols likely to fuel tensions between Washington and Beijing.

“The latest effort by the United States to intimidate China in the South China Sea almost proves the point that the US is… ahistorical,” DeBar told Press TV.

Washington is trying to force China to behave in a certain way, DeBar noted, citing its massive military buildup near Chinese borders, from the Korean peninsula to Chinese territorial waters to India.

The US has deployed thousands of troops as well as a variety of advanced weaponry to its bases in South Korea to deter what it calls possible military action from North Korea.

The South China Sea and its neighboring countries are also hosting a range of American military assets.

On top of that, the US has been actively persuading India to counter China’s rise as a maritime power in exchange for increased military cooperation.

DeBar said this is the same approach that the US has towards Russia, trying to surround it with the help of its NATO allies.

“If you look at the map, you can see from the Baltics to the Korean peninsula the United States is militarily deployed, active and threatening,” he continued.

He said America’s aggressive attitude has only pushed China further toward forming an alliance with Russia which will only hurt Washington’s own interests given Moscow and Beijing’s economic and political influence.

“What frightens me, is the idea that people in Washington are pushing so hard on both Russia and China that the leadership in those two countries, which both by the way have nuclear weapons, may see no alternative to war,” DeBar concluded.
