The world champions Germany have defeated Italy 6-5 on penalties in Bordeaux to advance into the semi-finals of Euro 2016 tournament.

Neither side managed to make a breakthrough in an interesting opening 45 minutes. Joachim Loew’s men finally broke the deadlock when Mesut Ozil beat two defenders to the ball before firing-home from close range.

But, Antonio Conte’s Italy equalized 12 minutes from time through Leonardo Bonucci’s penalty after Jerome Boateng handled the ball inside the box.

No more goals in regulation and extra-time meant that the quarterfinal clash had to be decided in a penalty shootout, which turned-out to be an epic one that saw a few players from both sides produce some stunning misses.

Matteo Darmian failed to convert the Azzurri's 9th kick and it was Germany’s Jonas Hector who struck the all-important spot-kick and Germany reached the semifinals where they will meet either hosts France or Iceland.
