US-Russia differences over Syria

Major differences between Russia and the United States on fighting terrorism have once again come to the surface. The latest dispute is over Moscow’s plan to bomb the positions of al-Qaeda franchise in Syria, the al-Nusra Front terrorist group. As expected, the US is opposed to such a move. Washington argues that Russia could end up pounding what the White House calls the “moderate” opposition in Syria, in which the Nusrah Front has been embedded in the fight against the Syrian government forces.

Death of Muhammad Ali

This past week, the world lost a man known not only for his professional achievements but also his political and religious views. Boxing icon Muhammad Ali, who had previously won the title of the Sports Personality of the Century, died at the age of 74 in the US.

In 1964, he converted to Islam and abandoned his slave name — as he put it — to Muhammad Ali — now a free man.

US-China row

The US has ratcheted up threats against China over Beijing’s military and construction activities in the disputed islands of the South China Sea. At a security summit in Singapore, the Pentagon chief cautioned China against pressing on with the construction of a building on an islet to which the Philippines lays competing claims.
