Azeri cargo plane crash in Afghanistan, seven killed

This file photo shows an Antonov AN-12 cargo aircraft of Azerbaijan's Silk Way, similar to the one which crashed in the southern Afghan city of Lashkar Gah on May 18, 2016.

An Azerbaijani cargo plane has crashed after taking off in southern Afghanistan, killing seven of its nine crew members on board.

The incident occurred on Wednesday at about 7 p.m. local time (1430 GMT) shortly after the freight plane, operated by Azerbaijan’s Silk Way Airlines, took off from the Dweyer military airport in the city of Lashkar Gah in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand Province.

Reports said the nine people on board the aircraft comprised five citizens of Azerbaijan, three Ukrainians, and a pilot from Uzbekistan.

The State Civil Aviation Administration of Azerbaijan has confirmed the crash.

According to media reports, the two survivors have been flown to Kandahar Airfield for treatment.

While the exact cause of the crash in war-torn Afghanistan has not been specified, reports said there was “no military involvement.”

Back in July 2011, a Silk Way Airlines cargo plane from Azerbaijan crashed into a mountain in eastern Afghanistan, killing all the nine people on board.
