Saudi warplanes bomb Yemen despite UN-brokered ceasefire

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Saudi warplanes have bombed a district in Yemen’s southern city of Ta’izz despite a UN-brokered ceasefire. Yemen’s warring factions started peace talks in Kuwait last week but they were suspended after renewed airstrikes on Yemen. The Saudi war has killed over 94-hundred Yemenis since March 2015.
  • A new study shows poverty has surged to an unprecedented level in the UK. The report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation says some 670-thousand British households are so poor they cannot afford essentials such as food, heating, and clothes. It also says over 180-thousand households are in need of charities. 
  • Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff has once again denied corruption allegations, describing the senators seeking her impeachment as corrupt. Rousseff says everyone in Brazil knows that the president of the lower house has accounts abroad. In less than two weeks, a special committee will decide if the president should be impeached. 
  • Thousands of workers have rallied in the Greek capital Athens to protest the government’s planned social security reforms. The protesters chanted anti-government slogans outside the parliament. Activists say the planned measures are aimed at reducing the contribution of the state in social security. 
  • The European Court of Human Rights has criticized Turkey over what it calls discrimination against Alevi Muslims. The court has also accused Turkey of violating the right to religious freedom by withholding public funds for Alevi houses of worship. Ankara is yet to comment on the accusations.
  • The UN Security Council voices alarm over Israeli settlement plans in the occupied Golan Heights, just days after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to never relinquish the region. The international community has not recognized the occupation of the Golan Heights by the Israeli regime.
  • NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow says the Western military alliance will enhance its presence in Eastern Europe to protect its allies from potential threats. Vershbow says NATO is struggling with many complex risks, including the destabilizing actions of Russia.
  • US media projections show that Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has swept primaries in five states, namely Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. His main potential Democratic rival Hillary Clinton claimed victory in the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Bernie Sanders also won Democratic presidential primary in Rhode Island.
