Press TV has conducted an interview with Zayd al-Isa, a Middle East expert from London, about heavy casualties of the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group during clashes with the Syrian government forces in al-Qaryatayn town in the central Syrian governorate of Homs.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: We have reports that the Daesh terrorists are running out of many areas that are being liberated by Syrian forces, tell me the significance of this and what has to happen at this point to actually totally cut them off?

Isa: Well, there is absolutely no doubt that ISIS (Daesh) basically know they’re hobbling from one defeat to another major defeat. This actually comes hot on the heels of the massive triumph and spectacular victory by actually liberating and winning back Palmyra and also being able to launch an offensive to claw back the highly strategic area of Qaryatayn. Now, the massive significance comes from the fact that the ISIS were acutely aware and fully aware and indeed the Syrian government did not mince its words when it said clearly that it is coming to liberate and retake Qaryatayn from ISIS.

They had ample time to re-entrench and reinforce their defenses and on top of that they were thrown a helping hand by the major breach of the cessation of hostilities yesterday by al-Nusra Front - another terrorist organization – but backed up by other groups that are called by the US and also by their main staunchest allies and also paymasters Saudi Arabia and Turkey like Ahrar al-Sham and Jaysh al-Islam, who launched an offensive in a major breach of the cessation of hostilities in Aleppo’s southern areas in order to shore up the defenses of ISIS and … to throw them a lifeline in order to distract the Syrian forces.

Now this hasn’t actually materialized. The Syrian army went on, it took on ISIS, it took the fight to ISIS in both al-Qaryatayn and Palmyra, it turned the table against them and it turned the tide against them with the full emphatic backing of the Russian aerial support and also the emphatic unwavering support from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Now this shows that the Syrian army and the Syrian government has actually got the upper-hand now and this clearly demonstrates that this was an effort at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Turkey to actually severely and critically undermine the political process by actually thwarting the attempts of the Syrian army to retake areas that the Saudis claim that they are actually forging an alliance called a sectarian alliance, called the Islamic alliance, in order to specifically take on and fight ISIS.

Their main and principle call is actually to contain and keep ISIS as a viable credible threat in order to topple the Syrian government, which is one of the main objectives and also weaken and severely undermine Iraq and use it and its ground forces against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
