Fresh Saudi raids leave four Yemenis dead

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • In Yemen, at least four people have been killed in the latest Saudi artillery shelling on a residential area in the western city of Ta’izz. Meanwhile, Yemen’s Ansarullah forces have killed some 80 Saudi-backed militants during clashes in Ta’izz province. 
  • Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has condemned Istanbul’s deadly bomb attack, which claimed the lives of 5 people, including the bomber and injured dozens more. Davutoglu referred to the bombing as an act of treason, carried out by centers of terrorism.
  • At least 13 Egyptian policemen have been killed in an attack on a checkpoint in the Sinai Peninsula. Daesh terrorists have claimed responsibility for the attack. A car bomb exploded at the checkpoint near El-Arish, the provincial capital of North Sinai. Security forces have reportedly killed five of the terrorists.
  • Tunisia has reported fresh clashes between the army and militants close to the border with Algeria. The Defense Ministry says one soldier was injured during an exchange of fire. The North African country has witnessed a rise in extremism since the 2011 revolution that ousted President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali.
  • Americans rally against Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump outside his tower in New York. The demonstrators condemned Trump’s policies, which they said, threaten the immigration system and many people from the Latino, Black, Muslim, and other communities. Similar protests were held in several neighborhoods of the state of Arizona.
  • US President Barack Obama says the nuclear deal between Tehran and the P-Five-Plus-One group of countries has opened a new window of dialog. In a message to the Iranian people on the eve of the Persian New Year, Nowruz, Obama said, the US and Iran can work to expand people-to-people contacts.
  • French prosecutors say the main suspect of last year’s terror attacks in Paris planned to blow himself up at the city’s stadium, but changed his mind. Salah Abdeslam is being investigated in Belgium, where he was arrested on Friday. Brussels has charged Abdeslam with participation in terrorist murder. 
  • Mourners grieve and lay flowers in memory of the victims of an Emirati plane that crashed in the Russian port city of Rostov-on-Don on Saturday. Russian officials have confirmed the death of all 62 people onboard the Boeing aircraft, operated by the Dubai-based budget carrier FlyDubai.
