  • Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif says extremism and sectarianism pose common threats to the region and the world. He noted that regional states should tackle their common challenges by respecting the sovereignty of others. Zarif also said Tehran is ready to work with Saudi Arabia for stability in Syria.
  • UN Chief Ban Ki-moon has welcomed the agreement which calls for the temporary cessation of hostilities in Syria. He said the decision taken by the International Support Group for Syria, facilitates humanitarian access to besieged areas. White House Spokesman Eric Schultz has also called the agreement an important step.
  • Syrian militants say their foreign backers have provided them with a large number of missiles to help them stand against the government troops in the north of Aleppo Province. A militant commander says the ground-to-ground Grad missiles have been used to target army positions beyond the front line.
  • Palestinians stage a protest rally in the town of Afula in solidarity with hunger-striking Palestinian journalist Mohammed al-Qiq who has been in an Israeli jail since November 21. The protesters called for his immediate release. Palestinian medics have confirmed that Qiq’s health condition has deteriorated.
  • Anti-government protests in Bahrain have turned violent as security forces fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. The Bahrainis called for the release of political prisoners including the head of Bahrain’s main opposition party, Sheikh Ali Salman. The rallies were held ahead of the fifth anniversary of the kingdom’s popular revolution.
  • The International Committee of the Red Cross has turned down a call from Saudi Arabia for aid workers to leave parts of Yemen that are being hit in airstrikes. The ICRC said they will continue to operate in all regions of the country to reach the civilians affected by the conflict.
  • Two teenage girls have been killed at a high school shooting in the US state of Arizona. Police in the city of Glendale have sealed off the area and locked down the school. Investigations are underway to figure out the motive behind the shooting.
  • Leader of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Francis has me head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, in the Cuban capital Havana. This marks the first encounter between the leaders of two branches of the church in nearly a thousand years.
