Security Council to slap tougher sanctions on North Korea
The United Nations Security Council is working on a resolution that will impose tougher sanctions on North Korea in the aftermath of its recent nuclear test, a news agency says.
A Security Council diplomat, quoted by the Associated Press, said Thursday that the US was leading consultations with other members, including China, on the matter.
The diplomat said all 15 Security Council members agree that North Korea should be denuclearized, and this will be reflected in the new resolution.
A new resolution, however, isn't expected immediately, likely not in less than three weeks, the report said.
The council last approved sanctions against North Korea after its third nuclear test on Feb. 12, 2013.
On January 6, North Korea announced it had successfully conducted its first hydrogen bomb test.
The test prompted neighboring South Korea to resume its propaganda broadcasts along the border with the North.
North Korea says it is boosting defense capabilities in the face of enemy threats. The country is irked by joint military maneuvers by South Korea and the US, and views them as direct threats against its security.
