Australia arrests two suspects over plotting attacks in Sydney

Australian police have arrested two men over an alleged plot last year on some targets, including a key naval base, in Sydney.

The men, aged 24 and 20, were arrested in Sydney's suburbs on Wednesday.

"We will allege in their planning that they mentioned a few locations,” New South Wales Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said on Wednesday, adding, “We are aware and we will allege that Woolloomooloo, the navy base, was one of those locations."

She said the 20-year-old suspect, Mohammed Almouie, was associated with five other men, including a 15-year-old boy, who was charged earlier this month over a plot targeting a government building. The other, Abdullah Salihy, is charged with making a document to facilitate a terrorist attack.

Burn, however, assured that there was "no current threat" at this time of the year in the country.

"What we will be saying is that there was a group of people who came together with the idea, with the intent to do something, and they started to make preparations to carry out a terrorist act," she added.

The latest arrests were part of an ongoing operation which the police say has thwarted potential attacks by Daesh Takfiri terrorists. Since last year, 13 people have been arrested in this regard.

Australia has been on high alert for attacks by home-grown terrorists since last year. According to government officials, six attacks have been foiled over the past year in the country.
