US seeking to undercut Putin’s campaign in Syria: Analyst

Ashton Carter’s tour to the Middle East is another US attempt to undermine the Russian campaign in Syria, says Mark Dankof.

The US and its allies will undermine any campaign that attempts to curb the deadly conflicts in the Middle East region, says a political analyst.

US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter made a surprise visit to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Wednesday as part of an effort to win support for escalating the war against Daesh (ISIL).

According to a statement by the US Defense Department, Carter is directed by President Barack Obama to visit the region and ask for more military support from coalition partners and also from US forces in the region.

“The world knows that the United States, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Turkey have all been backing and promoting ISIS (Daesh) both in Syria and in Iraq,” Mark Dankof told Press TV on Wednesday, using another acronym for the Takfiri group.

“They have been training these people, importing them into these countries, providing military and logistical support for these people,” he said.

Dankof, a former Senate candidate, added that this intervention is carried out “at the behest of Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, and at the behest of Saudi Arabia and certainly according to the liking of [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan.”

“No one sees these American efforts as credible at all,” he said, arguing that Washington has been supporting terrorist groups like Daesh and al-Qaeda in the hope of “illegitimately” overthrowing the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Dankof also pointed to Russia’s aerial campaign against Daesh positions in Syria which was started in late September upon a request by Damascus.

The analyst said Russian President Vladimir Putin’s campaign has “complicated” the four-year-long conflict, mainly because the Russians are ready to counter US efforts in Syria.

Dankof described Washington’s military plans for the region as an attempt to “undercut” Putin.
