Saudis experiencing stalemate in Yemen war: Pundit
Press TV has conducted an interview with Ali Al Ahmed, director of the Institute for [Persian] Gulf Affairs (IGA) from Washington, on the increase of Saudi death toll during recent attacks of the Yemeni fighters.
The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: 19 Saudi soldiers have reportedly been killed and despite the resistance by the Yemenis, the Saudis continue with their offensive against the Yemeni population and infrastructure. Where do you think this war is heading to? What is Saudi Arabia hoping to achieve?
Ahmed: The Saudis are trying to inflict as much damage [as they can] on the civilian infrastructure and the Yemeni civilian population, because they have no advantage in terms of military. I mean they have not been able to capture or to take over more Yemeni territories in months.
So, they have really been in stalemate in terms of the Saudi invasion of Yemen. So, the best way to do is to use soft targets, civilian targets that they have been targeting for the past few weeks now, and have killed hundreds of Yemeni civilians including destroying hospitals deliberately and they’re now committing war crimes, using American and British bombs.
Press TV: Instead of a swift victory in Yemen, what the Saudis were expecting, they’re now being killed inside their own country while their troops inside Yemen have been targeted, how would this damage the Saudi leadership and unleash domestic opposition if the number of Saudi casualties increases?
Ahmed: The Saudis have been hiding their deaths in Yemen and hiding the number of soldiers killed. They are not the only one, the UAE’s doing the same, Jordanians, there are [several] Jordanian mercenaries who were killed in Yemen. Yet you don’t see or hear about that in the Jordanian media.
So, you are talking at really media blackout in terms of the losses from the Saudi despotic alliance that is attacking Yemen, because they are now really desperate and that’s why they purchase 1.5 billion dollars of what they think of smart bombs provided by the United States to bomb more civilian targets, kill more civilians and Yemeni children.
