Sweden tightens border controls over “security concerns”

Sweden has launched temporary border controls. Stockholm says the record influx of asylum seekers is currently posing a threat to public order and security.

The new controls that started at 11:00 GMT will be imposed for a period of 10 days and could be extended by 20-day periods. They will primarily extend to the bridge across the Oresund Strait on the border with Denmark and ferry ports in the region. Last week, Stockholm warned that it could not guarantee accommodation for more refugees. Meanwhile, Germany says it could send Syrian refugees back to other EU states from which they came. But Hungary has made it clear that it will take none while Denmark is seeking to tighten its immigration rules. Slovenia has also begun to erect new border fences, following a similar move by Budapest. More than 760,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean to EU territory this year.
