A shelling has killed at least five people, including a child, in Aleppo, northwestern Syria, a day after militants suffered a major blow around the flashpoint city.

Syria’s official news agency SANA said on Wednesday that several people were injured in the attack, which targeted Aleppo’s Ashrafiyah neighborhood.

The report did not elaborate on where the mortars were fired from but it could be a revenge attack by the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group which lost control of the Kwairis airbase south of Aleppo a day earlier.

Syrian forces on Tuesday managed to break a two-year-old siege on the strategic airport after repeated failed attempts over the past weeks. The Syrian government and military called the recapture a great victory saying it could significantly boost the future operations in Aleppo against the militants.

Another militant shelling on Tuesday targeted areas north of the capital, Damascus.

Syria has suffered from over four years of foreign-backed militancy, which the government blames on some countries, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

The Arab country is experiencing a relative ease from the turmoil as the government forces have made significant gains against militants of Daesh and other terrorist groups under a six-week air cover provided by Russia.

More than 250,000 have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced as a result of the crisis in Syria since March 2011.
