Iranian male and female athletes have put on outstanding displays of skills at the 2015 Thailand Open Fencing Championships, and snatched ten medals, among them three golds.

On Tuesday, the Iranian women’s team, comprised of Mahsa Pourrahmati, Azam Bakhti and Sakineh Nouri, emerged triumphant in its first epee contest staged at the 3rd Floor Island Hall in the Thai capital city of Bangkok, and overcame Thailand B team 45-30.

The Persians continued to deliver great performances afterward, and notched up a convincing win (45-23) against Thailand A epee squad in the semifinal round to advance to the final showdown.

The Iranian team breezed past the hosts in the last encounter to end its campaign at the international sporting event, and stood on the top of the podium.

The épée is the modern derivative of the dueling sword used in fencing. As a thrusting weapon, the épée is similar to a foil, but has a stiffer blade, which is triangular in cross-section with a V-shaped groove called a fuller, has a larger bell guard, and is heavier.

There are no rules regarding priority and right of way in the épée competitions, and the entire body is a valid target area.

Meanwhile, the Iranian men’s outfit, consisting of Alireza Adhami, Shervin Tolouei and Shahab Shams, defeated Thailand B team 45-20 in its first contest at the foil section.

They then trounced Thailand A squad 45-40 in the next round to advance to the final, where they conceded a 30-45 to South Koreans to claim the second position.

South Korea won the team gold in the sabre event. The team silver went to Thailand A, while Iran was third.

The victories came a day after Iran’s Mojtaba Abedini competed in the individual sabre competitions and managed to overwhelm his South Korean rival in the final encounter to take home the gold medal. Another Iranian athlete, Farzad Baher Arasbaran, also bagged the bronze in this category.

On Sunday, Iranian fencers Taher Ashouri and Ali Ya’qoubiyan finished third in the men’s individual epee competitions and shared a bronze medal.

Mahsa Pourrahmati received the gold medal in the women’s individual epee division after beating a representative from Indonesia 15-13 in the final meet.

Alireza Ahdami also picked up the bronze medal in the men’s individual foil category.
