A drunken man in India has died after he fell into a hole and construction workers accidentally built a road over him.

Police in the district of Katni in Madhya Pradesh State in central India said on Monday that the middle-aged man was returning home on Friday evening when he fell into the hole.

Road builders apparently filled the hole with tar without seeing him.

Later, locals spotted the man's shirt in the asphalt and pulled him out of the newly laid road.

A driver and a road building worker have been arrested in connection with the incident, a local newspaper said.

"His body has been sent for post-mortem and further investigation is in process," police sub-inspector N.P. Chaudhary told Reuters TV.
