FBI to help Arlington police probe shooting death of black teen

Officer-in-training Brad Miller (R) shot and killed unarmed Christian Taylor on Friday.

The FBI has been asked to help investigate the shooting death of an unarmed black college student by a police officer in Texas, authorities said.

During a news conference Saturday night, Arlington Police Chief Will Johnson said he requested assistance from the FBI's Dallas field office following the shooting of Christian Taylor.

Officer-in-training Brad Miller, 49, shot and killed 19-year-old Taylor on Friday as he allegedly attempted to escape from police officers dispatched to a car dealership after reports of a suspected burglary.

A struggle happened when police officers confronted Taylor, and at some point during the altercation, Miller discharged his weapon, police said. Taylor died at the scene.

Taylor was a sophomore at Angelo State University in San Angelo, where he played on the football team as a defensive back.

Chief Johnson said he was confident his department would conduct “a transparent, thorough and fair investigation” into the incident, but warned that it might be “lengthy and at times frustratingly slow.”

He acknowledged that Taylor’s shooting death was not an isolated incident. “[It] has occurred as our nation is grappling with the problems of social injustice, inequities, racism and police misconduct.”

Officer Miller has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The shooting took place as police across the United States have come under increased scrutiny over excessive use of force, especially in cases involving black suspects.

It also came a year after the killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, by a while police officer, which spawned the Black Lives Matter movement.

On Saturday, demonstrators marched in the streets of Ferguson and called for justice before Sunday which marks Brown’s first death anniversary.

In November 2014, a predominantly white grand jury--of nine white and three black judges--decided not to indict Darren Wilson for killing Brown, causing months of more unrest across the country.
