Press TV has interviewed Pam Bailey, with Euromid Monitor of Human Rights, from Los Angeles, to ask for her take on the issue of Israeli settlers’ crimes against Palestinians in the occupied territory.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: How do you feel about of course this case of not only the 18-month-old baby who passed away but this entire issue of settler crimes?

Bailey:  Well you know there has been a long pattern of the Israeli ... [regime] including very racist hardcore elements in the ... [regime] every time it tries to make a coalition that panders to the side of the ... [regime] and it actually fostered that kind of environment by giving them incentives to live in those areas. So this is predictable and it’s about time that Israel not only take action but go much further than that with. The whole climate of occupation causes this kind of behavior. So, yes there needs to be action like the Arab League just called for. I’ll be surprised if it is going to takes action because they have been allowing this to happen years so I’ll wait to see that. But there have to be acknowledgment that this is just a symptom of a much bigger disease and that is the occupation itself.

Press TV: And the question which always exist Ms. Bailey in many people’s minds is when will the US act on this issue of settler crimes?  How do you feel about it at this point? Are we coming to those cross roads at this point?

Bailey: Well, you know I’d like to say we are. I mean there definitely has been some changes in that direction, but it still appears to me that the US president is held hostage by the Congress and you know we have seen really examples I mean this recently when we had Netanyahu come and address the US Congress about permission from our president to talk about Iran. I have not seen any evidence at all that there is enough Congress people who are willing to stand up and speak out against Israel...some desire on the president’s part to start cracking down on Israel I think, he [Obama] thinks he is held hostage by Congress and I think some of others perceptions actually. He has not tried. So, I am not going to hold my breath on that. What I would like to see is a long-term reform in the UN so the US doesn’t hogtie any effort to hold Israel into account.
