Palestinian Fatah member killed in southern Lebanon
A senior member of the Palestinian Fatah movement has been gunned down in the Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp in southern Lebanon.
Palestinian media sources said unidentified gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on Talal al-Urduni and his bodyguards while he was visiting the refugee camp.
Urduni and one of his guards died in the attack while another guard was wounded.
Gunfire continued to be heard in the camp after the incident.
No group, so far, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Lebanese armed forces are not allowed to enter the camp, and security in the camp has been delegated to the Palestinians themselves.
Urduni, who was in charge of security in the camp, had survived several assassination attempts in the past.
The Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.
The camp, which is located southeast of the port city of Sidon, had a population of about 70,000 residents before it swelled to nearly double this number as a result of the influx of refugees from the four-year Syrian conflict.
Ain al-Hilweh also houses fighters and militants belonging to various armed groups.
Lebanese officials believe militants belonging to one of the extremist groups could be behind the assassination of Urduni.
The Fatah movement, which was known in the past as the Palestinian National Liberation Movement, is a major Palestinian political party and the largest faction of the confederated multi-party Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The movement has a huge popular base, with thousands of fighters defending the movement and hundreds of politicians supporting it.
