A bus carrying a group of South Koreans has plunged off a bridge into a river in northeastern China, killing 10 passengers.

The incident happened on Thursday in the city of Ji'an in Jiangxi province, according to local media.

The driver of the vehicle, a Chinese citizen, also died in the incident, state broadcaster China Central Television reported.

Seoul said 26 South Koreans were on the bus as part of a 140-person delegation of mainly government employees.

The bus was on its way to its destination of Dandong, a city that borders North Korea.

The victims were in China to travel around historical sites, including places where Korean troops resisted Japanese armed forces during World War II.

Investigators are still probing the crash and the cause of the accident is not clear yet.

Fatal road accidents are common in China.

Last July, at least 38 people were killed when a van carrying inflammable liquid hit a bus on a highway in central China. The collision triggered a fire and an explosion, which destroyed five vehicles.

Another five people were also injured in that accident.
