Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton has hailed the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriages across the United States.

The former US secretary of state made the remarks on Friday night, hours after the Supreme Court termed attempts by conservative states to ban gay marriage unconstitutional.

Five of the nine court justices ruled on Friday morning that the right to marriage equality was enshrined under the 14th amendment, striking down bans in over a dozen states. The ruling means the number of states where same-sex marriage is legal will jump from 37 states to all 50.

Clinton’s 2016 Republican rivals have denounced the court decision, with Senator Ted Cruz saying that Supreme Court decisions approving ObamaCare and legalizing same-sex marriages across the country have brought “the darkest 24 hours” in America’s history.

Clinton warned the Republican presidential hopefuls not to turn the gay marriage issue into a “political football for this 2016 campaign.”

“It was an emotional roller coaster of a day," Clinton said. “This morning, love triumphed in the highest court in our land. Equality triumphed, and America triumphed.”

“Instead of trying to turn back the clock,” Clinton added, Republicans “should be joining us in saying no to discrimination once and for all.”

Critics have repeatedly said that the same-sex marriage will lead to the disintegration of the family institution and sanctity of marriage.

They say the same-sex marriage is against the nature of human beings and all divine religions define marriage as the union between one man and one woman.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld the controversial healthcare law, known as the Affordable Care Act. And, the next day, the top court made same-sex marriage legal all across the US.

“Yesterday and today were both naked and shameless judicial activism,” Senator Cruz said.
