US driving wedge between EU, Russia: Pundit

European Parliament

Press TV has conducted an interview with Dmitry Linnik, a freelance journalist from London, to investigate a call by the European Union for stringent measures against Russia and what it calls Moscow’s aggressive and divisive policies.

This is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: The last time that I checked in particular the Eurozone countries, 19 members I believe, they are not doing that well, countries like Italy, Spain, and here you have the European Union that is pretty much calling measures to counter Russia’s aggressive policies. Isn't it the economical side of this something that the European Union should consider or other being pushed by other parties?

Linnik: I think you are right, they are being pushed by other parties, they are being pushed by Washington basically if we sort of make things very brief with willing support from some quarters of European politics in European countries particularly in eastern Europe, Poland, the Baltic states, those people are very anti-Russian and they are willing partners of the United States in that quest to drive a wedge between Europe and Russia.

Press TV:  So if that is indeed true then how far is the European Union are going to go with this and more importantly I should say that what type of reaction and game plan does Russia and in particular the Russian President Vladimir Putin have on this?

Linnik: Well, the EU parliament’s decision is just verbalizing what has been the effect of life for the past few months if not years, lack of strategic partnership, lack of a serious relationship, that has been going through bad to worse over the past few years.

As far as strategic aims of both sides, I am talking about Russia and the EU, I think in the long run they will still revert to cooperation of some kind, it is just impossible in the modern world to isolate the two parties as it were for strength of economic cooperation and actually the security cooperation will in the end, in the final count be managed by both parties  equally in cooperation as well. So this is temporary but this is very very bad of course.
