Thousands gathered in the heart of New York City for an International Women's Day March for Gender Equality and Women's Rights.

Participants have assembled in front of the United Nations headquarters and will make their way across New York City to Times Square, where the march will end.

2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, a significant turning point in the global agenda for gender equality. The Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action, adopted unanimously by 189 countries in 1995, is said to be a blueprint for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

However participants at this year’s march say two decades on, the promise for gender equality is only partially fulfilled.

Organizers say they hope 2015 will provide new opportunities to galvanize political will, reconnect and mobilize the public.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March is “Empowering Women, Empowering Humanity: Picture it!”
