Brazilian police kill 13 suspected bank robbers in Salvador
At least 13 people have been killed in a shootout between police and a group of suspected bank robbers trying to blow up an automated teller machine in the northeastern Brazilian city of Salvador.
Police, tipped off earlier, opened fire on a group of 30 men who were “planning to rob a bank branch" with explosives on Friday morning, the Bahia state headquarters of the military police said.
During the firefight, a police sergeant and three suspects were wounded. Two of the injured suspects are reported to be in serious condition.
The rest of the gang ran away and police forces seized narcotics and high-caliber guns after the shoot-out.
Police and intelligence services have launched a joint investigation into the deadly incident in the hope of preventing similar ones in the future.
Growing violence has forced Brazilian officials to invest more on security measures. They spent nearly 100 billion dollars in 2013 to improve security across the country.
