Tehran to assess fee for driving on main roads

Tehran Municipality is mulling a plan to initiate pricing for main roads in a bid to reduce traffic congestion in the Iranian capital city.

A member of the Tehran Islamic Council said the body is studying a plan for levying charges on trips on four main roads in the city.

Ahmad Donya-Mali said according to the scheme, drivers would need to pay 3,000 IRR (less than 10 cents) for passage through three main tunnels and an elevated expressway in Tehran, according to reports.

The draft law has reportedly excluded some vehicles from paying the price, including the electric and hybrid cars. The drivers are supposed to pay the tolls through adhesive stickers on their cars which contain microchips without any need to stop at toll booths.

If the plan gains final approval, this would be the first time in Iran that a city starts road pricing. The officials have claimed that the move is mainly aimed at reducing the traffic congestion and pollution in the city and encouraging the citizens to use public transportation.

However, the plan has also faced criticism, with some saying that it is solely aimed at generating more revenues for Tehran Municipality and helping it better maintain the giant structures in the metropolis.
