The spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry says the repression of pro-Palestinian protests across the United States has removed the mask of hypocrisy from the false defenders of freedom of speech and human rights.

In a post on his X account on Friday, Nasser Kan'ani said the US government has distorted the truth on the ground and described genuine wrath of students and academic staff and their protests as “anti-Semitism”.

He added that the US resorted to violence and sought to justify the crackdown in a bid to silence peaceful gatherings and protests of pro-Palestine students but all their efforts will not detract the indecency of their actions.

"A significant number of Jews, including Jewish students, have declared their disgust with the hateful crimes of the Zionist regime (Israel) and the US government’s shameful support for it," the Iranian spokesman emphasized.

Demonstrators have gathered on at least 30 US university campuses since last month, often erecting tent camps to protest the Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip. University campuses in Australia, Canada, France, Italy and the UK have also been the scene of pro-Palestinian protests.

In the United States, hundreds of helmeted police swarmed the site of a pro-Palestinian protest at the University of California at Los Angeles, firing flash bangs, arresting demonstrators and dismantling their encampment.

US police arrested about 2,200 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the country in recent weeks, the Associated Press reported.

The students are calling for an end to Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza and demanding schools divest from companies that support the Israeli regime.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the occupying entity in response to the Israeli regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Since the start of the offensive, the Tel Aviv regime has killed at least 34,622 Palestinians and injured 77,867 others.
