A former CIA
analyst says that the United States mainstream media is “captive” to people who
like to have wars across the world.
In an interview
with the U.S. Desk, Ray McGovern expressed concern about the American media’s
attitude towards Iran, warning that they are now beating the drums of war
against the Persian country, just like they did in the Iraq case.
Several months ahead of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the United States, Britain and their allies claimed, through media, that Saddam Hussein, the former Iraqi dictator, possessed weapons of mass destruction. But later, American officials admitted that the WMD claims were all fake.
McGovern cited
the Washington Post as an example of how the mainstream media manipulates the
news, particularly to delegitimize Iran’s nuclear energy program, which is
totally allowed under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
“If [people are]
only exposed to the mainstream media, that’s all they’ll get and all they’ll
remember,” he warned.
In his recent article titled “Eyes Wide Shut on the Iraq War,” McGovern writes how President George W. Bush and his administration were putting the finishing touches on their unprovoked invasion of Iraq, the mainstream U.S. news media had long since capitulated, accepting the conventional wisdom that nothing could – or should – stop the march to war.
