The Obama administration has blocked a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning Israel’s latest expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israel has announced the construction of thousands of new settlement homes following last month’s historic recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state by the United Nations.

The White House has publicly criticized Israel but has refused to take punitive action, including withholding any of the billions in annual U.S. aid.

On November 29, The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to upgrade Palestine’s status at the U.N. from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state” despite strong opposition by Israel and the U.S.

The vote was seen as a long-sought victory for the Palestinians, but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States, a staunch supporter of the Israeli regime, which voted against the measure.

During the Israeli regime’s deadly offensive on the besieged Gaza Strip last month, more than 160 Palestinians were killed and some 1,200 others were injured.

Yet, President Obama said that the U.S. is "fully supportive of Israel's right to defend itself."

Israel receives about $3 billion from the U.S. in direct foreign assistance each year, which is roughly one-fifth of America's foreign aid budget.

AIPAC has also lobbied heavily for U.S. funding of various Israeli weapons programs, including Israel's Arrow missile system.

Under Obama, U.S. financial aid to Israel is at its highest levels ever.
