On November 29, The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to upgrade Palestine’s status at the U.N. from “non-member observer entity” to “non-member observer state” despite strong opposition by Israel and the U.S.

The vote was seen as a long-sought victory for the Palestinians, but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States, a staunch supporter of the Israeli regime, which voted against the measure.
