Israel’s attack on the USS Liberty back in
1967 was “intentional”, says Alison Weir, executive director of
If Americans Knew.
“There is
no question about that. There is a great deal of evidence that it was
intentional. The ship was flying a large American flag when Israeli force shot
that down”, she said in a phone
interview with the U.S. Desk on Saturday.
The USS Liberty came under attack by an Israeli jet fighter and
Israeli torpedo boats during the Six Day war. Thirty-four crew members were
killed and 170 others were injured in the incident.
On the 45th anniversary of the incident, Weir questioned the accuracy
of the sole investigation conducted by the U.S. government at the time, saying
that the probe was “a cover-up” as confessed by a top member of the
investigation team years after the attack.
“The
survivors of that attack and the families of those who were killed are still
actively calling for a fair and public investigation of what happened that day
45 years ago”, she said.
