A US study suggests that patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are more vulnerable to suffering from certain mood disorders.
According to the study published in Fertility and Sterility, depression and anxiety are more prevalent among women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
More than half of women with polycystic ovary syndrome were affected by at least one mental health disorder; depression was found in 40 percent, panic syndrome in 15 percent, and binge-eating disorder in 23 percent of these women.
Reports show the prevalence of mood disorders considerably increase during the course of the disease, making routine screening and aggressive treatment necessary.
Researchers urged physicians to include mental health assessments in the initial evaluation of all women with PCOS. They also recommend the referral of these patients to dermatologists and weight loss counselors, as it has been found that the hirsutism, acne and excess weight associated with PCOS contribute to emotional problems.
