A 26-year-old Chinese fan of Euro 2012 soccer tournament has died of sleep deprivation after remaining awake to watch the matches for 11 nights.

Jiang Xiaoshan died after watching every moment of the competition without any sleep, Hunan province's Sanxiang Metropolis newspaper reported.

The time-difference between Europe and China means that most of the Euro 2012 matches start around 3 a.m. local time, finishing at daybreak.

His friends were shocked by the news and claimed he lived a "relatively healthy life."

Dr. Liu Zhiling, a doctor from the local People's Hospital, said the combination of alcohol and tobacco combined with exhaustion led to his death.

“Jiang was in good health. But staying up through the night and not sleeping enough weakened his immune system, and he drank and smoked while watching, triggering his condition,” she said.

The Euro 2012 is being held in Poland and Ukraine.
