A gunman has killed a 32-year-old man and critically injured a woman in broad daylight in a shooting in east London, raising questions about the city’s security as it prepares to host the Olympics.
The shooting took place in Ealing, west London, close to Heathrow airport, which is the main travel hub for Olympic visitors.
“We were called at about 2:50pm this afternoon [on Wednesday] to reports of shots fired in Felix Road, W13,” a Metropolitan police spokesman said.
“A 32-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman in her late 20s has gone to a west London hospital where she remains in a critical condition,” the spokesman added.
The police have not yet managed to identify the shooter or make any arrests in connection with the incident.
The shooting can prove embarrassing for the police and, by extension, the British government as London gets ready to host Olympic tourists ahead of the Games, which will open on July 27.
