A British lawmaker says the deployment of US and UK warships in the Persian Gulf and Washington and EU's sanctions against Iran portends an imminent military strike on the Islamic Republic.

Britain's Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said on January 24 that two British and French warships and the American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln had entered the Persian Gulf on Sunday.

On January 22, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta vowed to maintain a fleet of eleven warships in the Persian Gulf region mostly to project sea power against Iran.

“The drum beats of war are being aggressively pounded out in Europe with constant denials that Iran might be prepared to meet or negotiate,” Jeremy Corby, member of British parliament, wrote in an article on the Morning Star website.

“Across the Atlantic, the US Republican presidential candidates vie with each other at each primary as to who will be the first to bomb Iran and start another war,” he said.

Corby added that the war threats against Iran come as all over Western Europe and the US, there are increasing levels of unemployment, cuts in public expenditure and a whole generation of young people has had their hopes for the future crushed.

The British lawmaker said the Western political leaders are “wrong” in assuming that “waving the flag of patriotism and war will somehow or another magic away the misery of austerity.”

Washington and Tel Aviv have repeatedly threatened Tehran with the "option" of a military strike based on the allegation that Iran's nuclear program may consist of a covert military aspect.

With the upcoming US presidential election, the Republican candidates have similarly heightened the anti-Iran rhetoric in an apparent bid to win over the Zionist lobby.

“The generation that opposed the Afghan and Iraq wars in their millions is not going to stand for yet another conflict to waste resources, destroy lives and make the world and even more dangerous place,” Corbyn concluded.
