On the anniversary of the 25th January revolution the military had planned a formal celebration in the stadium, in addition to many popular celebrations nationwide. However no other event was quite as immense as the amount of Egyptians that flocked to the symbolic heart of the revolution in downtown cairo's Liberation square.
Thousands and thousands of people have been gathering in the iconic Tahrir square since yesterday, to mark the passing year since the revolution began. Voices are divided between those wishing to celebrate the efforts and those protesting for completion of the revolution.
Over seventy parties and organizations had announced their intention to participate in the protests. In the morning some groups said that they were disappointed with those who had clearly come to celebrate when the revolution was not complete.
Several groups of protesters entered the square shouting for the rights of the Martyrs, claiming that revolution had witnessed many set back throughout the year with the imprisonment of activists and ruthless attacks on protesters. There was a firm message that any lives lost would not go in vain.
During the afternoon more marches arrived to join the already swelling numbers. Some people had travelled from other parts of Egypt to be involved in the historic event as well as coming to celebrate they had a clear message.
By night fall more marches broke away from the square and echoes of chants demanding the downfall of the military council could be heard throughout the back streets of downtown, whilst other Egyptians chose to celebrate with dancing and fireworks.
