Syria backbone of anti-Israel resistance: Velayati
A senior Iranian official has described Syria as the “backbone of the anti-Israel resistance front,” noting that Lebanon would not have succeeded in its struggle against Israel without Syria’s support.
“What is taking place inside Syria is a plot; and Americans, Zionists and the reactionary forces of the region have a hand in this plot,” President of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati said in a meeting with Head of the Lebanese Democratic Party Emir Talal Arslan in Tehran on Thursday.
The Iranian official added, “Over the past years, we have experienced various types of acts and conspiracies hatched by the Zionists and the Americas against the interests of Muslims and the countries that are somehow on the frontline of the anti-Israeli resistance; it should be said, however, that what we are witnessing in the region today is the worst form of the fight against Muslims.”
Velayati also expressed surprise that certain countries that have no understanding of democracy at all are throwing their weight behind the militants in Syria - most of whom not Syrians - under the pretext of the establishment of democracy in the crisis-stricken Arab state.
Velayati emphasized that Iran and its regional allies, including Iraq and Lebanon, will defend Syria’s territorial integrity, and are supportive of the Syrian nation.
Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for over two years.
