Iranian deputy Foreign Minister for European and American affairs says the West should lift the illegal sanctions against Iran.
Majid Takht Ravanchi said in a Monday meeting with senior member of the European Parliament Hannes Swoboda in Tehran that in order to build trust and to show goodwill to the Iranian nation, sanctions against the country must be lifted.
Swoboda heads a three-member delegation of Socialist European Parliament lawmakers who arrived in Tehran on Sunday to hold talks with the country’s senior officials.
Takht Ravanchi expressed the Iranian government’s determination to find a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue.
During the meeting, the Iranian official and European parliamentarian also discussed the crisis in Syria and called for finding a peaceful solution to the matter.
They both agreed that the presence of foreign-backed extremist and terrorist groups in the region is “threatening and dangerous” for regional and global peace and stability and called for serious measures to counter the issue.
Takht Ravanchi and Swoboda emphasized that all influential groups and countries must attend the forthcoming Geneva 2 conference on the unrest in Syria.
The Iranian official rejected any precondition for Tehran’s presence in the conference and said the Islamic Republic is ready to play a positive role in this regard.
The Geneva 2 conference is seen as a chance to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis. The event has been delayed for months, but Moscow and Washington are now trying to fix a date for it in mid-November.
Russia and China have urged the presence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the conference.
