Commenting on his phone conversation with US President Barack Obama, Rouhani said the talk had been focused on resolving the dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program and respecting the country’s nuclear rights.
During their talks at the end of Rouhani’s trip to New York on September 27, Rouhani and Obama assigned Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry to quickly set the stage for cooperation between the two countries.
The United States, Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program. The Islamic Republic has categorically rejected the allegation.
Iran argues that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani says his administration will abide by its commitment to improving the country’s foreign relations and meeting public demands.
“The Administration of Prudence and Hope will fulfill people’s demands within the framework of Leader [of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei]’s policies, and is committed to its obligations towards the people and [its obligations] to bring about changes in [Iran’s] foreign relations, which is a national demand,” Rouhani said on Sunday.
Rouhani said the recent presidential election in Iran has changed the world’s view towards the country and created an opportunity to make the world hear the messages of the Islamic Republic.
Rouhani arrived in Tehran on Saturday after wrapping up his visit to New York for the 68th annual session of the UN General Assembly.
During his trip, the Iranian president delivered a speech at the UN General Assembly and had his numerous interviews and meetings in New York.
Rouhani, who currently holds the rotating presidency of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), also addressed the opening of NAM’s Ministerial Meeting on Cooperation for the Rule of Law at the International Level, held at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday.
