A senior Iranian lawmaker has warned against any US military intervention in Syria, noting that the repercussions of such a move would not be limited to Syrian borders.
Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Wednesday that the United States has failed in its policies toward Syria over the past three years, and is seeking to restore its lost reputation by means of an attack on the crisis-hit Arab state.
He went on to say that Israel would suffer a much graver loss than its previous defeats in the 33-day war with Lebanon in the summer of 2006, the 22-day offensive against the blockaded Gaza Strip at the turn of 2011, and the eight-day aggression against the Gaza Strip in November 2012, if Syria is attacked.
“Given the sensitivities in the region and the critical situation imposed on Syria particularly the use of chemical weapons by terrorists, any further warmongering in the country will have dire consequences for the US and the Zionist regime [of Israel],” Boroujerdi stated.
The Iranian lawmaker further noted that Washington together with its European and regional allies have utilized all their capacities in order to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and are using all inhumane means, including widespread support for terrorist groups in Syria.
Hundreds of people were killed and scores of others injured in a chemical attack in the Damascus suburbs of Ain Tarma, Zamalka and Jobar on August 21.
The foreign-backed opposition has blamed the Syrian government for the deadly attack, saying that 1,300 people were killed in the poison gas attack.
The Damascus government, however, has vehemently denied the accusation, saying the chemical attack was carried out by the militants themselves as a false-flag operation.
In March, dozens of people were killed in a chemical attack in the northern province of Aleppo. A Russian-led inquiry said that militants were behind the deadly attack.
