Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem has felicitated Mohammad Javad Zarif on his appointment as the foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In his congratulatory message, the top Syrian diplomat touched upon the cordial relations between Syria and the Islamic Republic and reiterated that both countries have common enemies led by the Zionist regime of Israel, which has occupied Palestine and some other Arab lands.
“The common resolve of both governments and nations to enhance ties in all fields, especially in foreign policy, requires further coordination and collaboration in safeguarding cultural values, international principles and national sovereignty as well as rejecting foreign intervention and complying with the objectives and principles of the UN Charter,” read Muallem’s message.
Muallem pointed to Zarif’s experience in the field of international relations, including his past performance at the United Nations, and said he was confident that both countries will work together closely to further boost reciprocal ties and tackle foreign plots and intervention.
The new Iranian foreign minister assumed office last week following his confirmation by the members of Iran's Majlis.
Zarif previously served as Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations in the early 2000s.
