Afghan President Hamid Karzai has said that the United States has stopped fighting against the Taliban.

He made the remarks on Saturday in Kabul during a speech to the members of the Afghan Council of Islamic Scholars, Afghan media outlets reported.

The US invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across the country despite the presence of thousands of US-led soldiers.

Karzai had previously announced that peace talks with the Taliban would start in the next six months.

Earlier this month, Karzai said the greatest threat to Afghanistan is not the Taliban but the interference by foreign powers.

He also said the security situation in southern Afghanistan had been far better before foreign troops arrived in the country.

According to the latest figures released by the website icasualties.org, 3,257 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led war began in 2001.
