Iran beats Iraq in West Asian Basketball games

Iran’s national men’s basketball team has registered its second consecutive win in the 2013 West Asian Basketball Association (WABA) Championship.


The Iranian basketball players edged passed the Iraqi outfit 94-61 in a match played in the 3, 000-seat Azadi Basketball Hall in west Tehran on Friday.

Iran’s first victory came in the opening match of the tournament against Jordan on February 7.

Iranians collected 93 points while the Jordanian side could only amass 55.

Iraq’s squad will play against Lebanon in its last match on Saturday.

The 2012 WABA tournament opened on February 7 and will wrap up on February 11.

The sports event has bring together basketball players from Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.

The 2013 WABA Championship is the qualifying tournament for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. The two best teams, excluding Iran, will qualify for the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship.

The 2013 FIBA Asia Championship will be held from August 1 to 11 in Manila, the Philippines.

The competition serves as the qualifying tournament for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
