Search for a US Air Force F-16 fighter jet reported “missing” over the Adriatic Sea on Monday continues off the northern Italian coastline with no apparent success. Reporting the so far futile search efforts, press reports on Tuesday added that “traces of fuel” floating in the water were observed by search teams between the coastal towns of Lido di Savio and Cervia. However, no sign of the war aircraft or its pilot has yet been found, Italian daily Corriere della Sera reported. The jetfighter, reportedly flying out of a US military airbase near Aviano, was engaged in an aerial training mission with other aircraft on Monday when radio contact was lost. One report further indicates that the missing pilot had reported some sort of trouble in his last radio contact at 1900 GMT, citing “airport sources.” The search for the missing war plane and its pilot reportedly got underway by American military aircraft and the Italian coast guard. The development comes as US media have reported on current efforts by the American military to provide aerial surveillance, aircraft refueling and troop transport support for the French troops engaged in a war in Mali.
