Human rights groups are urging the European Union to apply pressure on Israel to put an end to its occupation of Palestine. A senior member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization says the E-U is obliged to take action against Israel for its continued violations of international law
The Executive Committee member of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Hanan Ashrawi, has urged the European Union to put an immediate end to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories. In a meeting with the E-U representative to the West Bank, Gaza Strip and UNRWA, Ashrawi stressed the importance of the European role in the two-state solution and in bringing about an end to the illegal occupation of Palestine. He also called for pressure on Israel to halt settlement activities on the occupied territories before it is too late. Palestinian human rights groups are supporting this move and have also urged the European Union to take action immediately. Two EU officials discussed ideas to that effect as well as steps relevant to Palestine in its accession to UN charters and conventions and Palestine joining UN agencies and organizations. In addition, Ashrawi told a Canadian delegation representing the National Democratic Party that despite Canada’s official position supporting Israel and a negative vote in the UN, the Palestinians will not give up on Canada. She said quote -“We believe what is required is an even-handed approach in support of a just peace consistent with international and humanitarian law.” (Approved) PtC Ashrawi along with human rights organizations in Palestine are now placing an emphasis on both the EU and other international organizations to speak out about putting an end to the Israeli Occupation.
