At least two people have been reportedly shot in a gunfire which erupted at a high school in Bakersfield in the US state of California.

The incident took place about 9:00 am local time (1700 GMT) on Thursday at Taft Union High School.

"We have two victims and the shooter has been taken into custody," a local official with the sheriff’s office told AFP.

The official did not provide further details with regards to the incident and the condition of the victims.

The shooting comes less than a month after 26 people, including 20 children and six adults, were killed by a gunman at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in the US state of Connecticut.

In another shooting incident a week later, four people, including the shooter, were killed in the state of Pennsylvania. A number of police officers were also injured in the exchange of fire.

There have been several deadly shootings across the United States over the past few weeks, putting the issue of lax gun control laws back in the spotlight.
